| In 2004 we were approached by a local pastor and associate of NM asking us if we could pioneer a hostel in Sivangangai for children with difficult home circumstances, living in villages too far from the local schools to be able to attend.
In setting up the hostel, it was hoped the children would greatly benefit from this opportunity, enabling them to go to school to receive an education for the first time, whilst learning about God’s love. | |
 | Initial hostility from a largely Hindu community made it difficult for us to get up and running, and the hostel had to remain very low key, but since our first five boys successfully sat their end of school exams in 2006, the local community has been able to appreciate the value of the hostel. A recent government inspection praised the hostel and they were very keen for us to expand. |
| We currently have six boys at the hostel, aged from 8 to 14 years old. All of our staff are Christians, and there are full time ‘dorm parents’ taking on the responsibilities of the care, nurture and development of the children. The boys all enjoy staying at the home and have developed close friendships with each other. They are thriving academically as well as spiritually. A weekly Bible study hosted by one of the local pastors has proved a big success with the boys who enjoy inviting their school friends on a regular basis.
We have a long waiting list, so the more sponsors we get, the more children we can accept.
